Dear Family, Friends, and Neighbors throughout the world,
My name is Jennifer. I am a Registered Nurse. I see many heart rending situations every day as I work at the hospital. I had 2 patients on the same night that were in such opposite situations that I could no longer do nothing for my brother. First I will tell about my patients and then my brother.
One patient, early 20's, was hospitalized because of a reaction that is a rare side effect of a medication she was given at a drug rehab center. She received a blood product transfusion and would go back to the rehab for further medical and psychiatric care. She was in the rehab due to cocaine, alcohol, and marijuana abuse. She was getting help. Both her parents were doctors and could easily afford the cost of rehab and psychiatric care.
The other patient I had on the same night was even younger. She also at one time had a drug abuse problem but she no longer did. She had an anoxic brain injury from drug use. She is fed through a tube, can't speak, frequent hospitalizations, and has no chance for rehabilitation.
I was so overcome at work with the similarities and differences of these 2 patients and I felt that God was showing me something. I will now tell you about my brother.
My brother is Brent Hawkins. He is 37 years old, married, and has 3 children (from other marriage). He needs help. His story is complex and long. I will give a shortened edition. He had a car accident several years ago shortly before his marriage where he was hit by an oncoming driver. Because of it he had a back injury that resulted in severe back pain. He is a welder by profession and does so well that when his welds were x-rayed they looked like robotic welds. He continued to work after his accident and used pain killers to keep working. He ended up needing surgery and could no longer work as a welder. This resulted in a relapse that started with prescription drug abuse and progressed.
He has a history of drug abuse in the past and people who have abused drugs are at risk for relapse. He has relapsed. His wife also has a history of drug abuse and relapsed as well. She also is a breast cancer survivor. She lost her job and they have fallen together. Her family has sent her to rehab recently for help but my brother is still at home. He wants help but does not have the resources to get help. He needs medical, spiritual, and psychiatric help. He has even been offered his old job back if he can get back on his feet. I am asking for help for him.
That night when I was at work I could only feel in my heart that if something was not done he would become like the second patient. If something was done he would be able to go back into recovery. I came home and prayed I would be shown what I can do. I received a strong impression that I should set up a recovery fund for Brent Hawkins.
The fund is set up at Wells Fargo. You can can make donations to the "Brent Hawkins Recovery Fund".
I also have set up a blog at www.brenthawkinsrecoveryfund.blogspot.com to know that your contributions were used with the utmost prayer and thought.
